I have decided to do this post on the use of Google Docs in education. I have chosen this topic because this is the platform my school has chosen to collaborate and share work with staff and students. I have not done much with it as I have been taking online classes.
My thoughts are that it would be a great way to connect with students outside of class time. They would have access to class work, notes, and other online materials all in one place.
Because of its conversion option no matter what program the kids have at home we as teachers can still open their work to review.
“The trick is in the File/Save As menu; you can save documents as RTF, PDF, HTML Word, or Open Office after you open said documents inside Google Docs. We’ve blogged about document conversion before here at Lifehacker, and this is definitely a nice addition.” — Wendy Boswell

Teachers and Students talk about googledocs

This was a great post. I have been using Google Docs. for some time, but now our school has taken over and we are using Google Docs for everything. E-mail is almost never used as we have or docs for most day to day work.

Thank you!

Thanks so much for this! I wasn’t very familiar with googledocs, but I learned a lot from this post. The video clips were great–I see how useful this can be in the classroom. For one, students can work on documents together (which seems better than a wiki that only one person can edit at a time). Also, teachers can tell who did what part of a project and know if the work was distributed equally. That is a huge problem for me when I assign group work and this might help a lot. Thanks again!

I saw a great presentation on Google Docs at a Educational Tech conference recently. The woman who presented was so inspiring. She had retired from industry and took a job at a school district as a Google Aps Specialist. She and the teachers (and students) she worked with did some really great projects through Google. My district is currently using Blackboard which was an essential tool when we first got it but I’m feeling penned in by it now since Google Aps have taken off.
